Data Introduction
To fulfil the SAEON vision, SAEON has been mandated to archive environmental datasets to provide reliable long-term data that can inform scientific research and decision making in the context of global environmental change. SAEON therefore promotes the responsible archiving and dissemination of all environmental data, while respecting the legal rights of the data user and data provider. SAEON encourages the archiving of environmental data for future generations.
Archiving data within a data infrastructure prevents the loss of environmental data through damage and prevents the loss of electronically stored data through software redundancy.
All data that is archived with SAEON is subject to any restrictions set upon the dataset by the data provider, with the understanding that at some future point the dataset will become publicly available (the time solely up to the choice of the data provider). However all metadata must be made available.
