%7B%22status%22%3A%22success%22%2C%22updateneeded%22%3Afalse%2C%22instance%22%3Afalse%2C%22meta%22%3A%7B%22request_last%22%3A0%2C%22request_next%22%3A0%2C%22used_cache%22%3Atrue%7D%2C%22data%22%3A%5B%7B%22key%22%3A%22STEZ94MK%22%2C%22library%22%3A%7B%22id%22%3A2592029%7D%2C%22meta%22%3A%7B%22creatorSummary%22%3A%22Weiss%22%2C%22parsedDate%22%3A%222019%22%2C%22numChildren%22%3A0%7D%2C%22bib%22%3A%22%26lt%3Bdiv%20class%3D%26quot%3Bcsl-bib-body%26quot%3B%20style%3D%26quot%3Bline-height%3A%201.35%3B%20%26quot%3B%26gt%3B%5Cn%20%20%26lt%3Bdiv%20class%3D%26quot%3Bcsl-entry%26quot%3B%26gt%3BWeiss%2C%20J.A.%20%282019%29%20%26lt%3Bi%26gt%3BSpatio-temporal%20change%20in%20riparian%5Cnwoodlands%20of%20the%20Kruger%20National%20Park%3A%20drivers%20and%20implications%26lt%3B%5C%2Fi%26gt%3B.%20MSc%20thesis.%20University%20of%20Cape%20Town.%26lt%3B%5C%2Fdiv%26gt%3B%5Cn%26lt%3B%5C%2Fdiv%26gt%3B%22%2C%22data%22%3A%7B%22itemType%22%3A%22thesis%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Spatio-temporal%20change%20in%20riparian%5Cnwoodlands%20of%20the%20Kruger%20National%20Park%3A%20drivers%20and%20implications%22%2C%22creators%22%3A%5B%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Joshua%20A%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Weiss%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22Verbal%20accounts%2C%20supported%20by%20limited%20ground-based%20and%20satellite%20images%2C%20reveal%20decreasing%20riparian%5Cnwoodland%20and%20a%20loss%20of%20large%20trees%20along%20the%20rivers%20of%20the%20Kruger%20National%20Park%20%28KNP%29%20over%20the%20last%5Cncentury.%20These%20habitats%20occupy%20a%20tiny%20fraction%20of%20the%20park%5Cu2019s%20surface%20area%20but%20fulfil%20critical%20ecological%5Cnfunctions%20and%20provide%20several%20ecosystem%20services.%20Little%20research%20has%2C%20however%2C%20focused%20on%20riparian%5Cnwoodland%20dynamics%20across%20the%20park.%20Here%20a%20multi-decadal%20time-series%20analysis%20of%20riparian%20woodland%5Cnextent%20was%20conducted%20to%20identify%20trends%20in%20extent%20and%20possible%20drivers%20of%20riparian%20woody%20vegetation%5Cnchange.%20Aerial%20and%20satellite%20imagery%20%281936%20to%202018%29%20was%20used%20to%20measure%20changes%20in%20the%20extent%20of%5Cnriparian%20woodland%20tree%20cover%20for%2018%20approx.%2010%20km%20long%20sites%20along%20five%20perennial%20and%20nine%20non-perennial%5Cnrivers%20in%20KNP.%20This%20change%20was%20compared%20in%20a%20multivariate%20time-series%20with%20river%20flow%20and%20rainfall%20data%20from%20nearby%20gauging%20and%20weather%20stations%2C%20respectively.%20Particular%20attention%20was%20paid%20to%20cumulative%20flow%20effects%2C%20as%20well%20as%20the%20frequency%20and%20magnitude%20of%20large%20infrequent%20disturbances%20%28LIDs%29%20such%20as%20droughts%20and%20floods%2C%20which%20regulate%20the%20depth%20of%20the%20water%20table%20and%20may%20manifest%20as%20a%20physical%20disturbance.%20Tree%20cover%20fluctuated%20over%20the%20time%20period%20and%20the%20trajectory%20of%20change%20varied%20between%20sites.%20Most%20sites%20%28n%3D11%29%20experienced%20a%20decline%20in%20overall%20tree%20cover%20over%20the%20period%20while%2014%20showed%20a%20downward%20trend%2C%20six%20significantly.%20Overall%20tree%20cover%20increased%20at%20six%20sites%2C%20three%20of%20which%20showed%20an%20increasing%20trend%20%28one%20significantly%29.%20There%20tended%20to%20be%20proportionately%20higher%20tree%20cover%20loss%20per%20year%20at%20sites%20with%20higher%20median%20tree%20cover.%20It%20appears%20that%20tree%20cover%20decreased%20substantially%20at%20a%20number%20of%20sites%20following%20the%20mega-flood%20event%20of%202000%20and%20subsequent%20large%20floods%20over%20the%20last%20decade.%20It%20was%20not%20possible%20to%20generalise%20responses%20for%20the%20different%20sites%2C%20no%20doubt%20because%20of%20varying%20geology%2C%20flow%20regimes%20and%20vegetation%20characteristics%20at%20each%20site%2C%20resulting%20in%20differing%20responses%20to%20aspects%20of%20river%20flow%20and%20rainfall.%20Peak%20flow%20and%20maximum%20rainfall%20events%2C%20however%2C%20were%20the%20strongest%20significant%20association%20with%20decreases%20in%20riparian%20tree%20cover%2C%20indicating%20that%20floods%20are%20potentially%20the%20biggest%20drivers%20of%20tree%20loss.%20Flow%20variability%20and%20cumulative%20rainfall%20appear%20to%20significantly%20influence%20woodland%20expansion.%20The%20initial%20findings%20from%20this%20study%20should%20prompt%20increased%20attention%20to%20riparian%20habitats%20through%20fine-scale%2C%20detailed%20work%20aimed%20at%20further%20understanding%20the%20dynamics%20of%20these%20systems%20and%20determining%20thresholds%20for%20conservation%20concern%20in%20an%20attempt%20to%20ensure%20persistence%20of%20these%20important%20ecosystems.%22%2C%22thesisType%22%3A%22MSc%20thesis%22%2C%22university%22%3A%22University%20of%20Cape%20Town%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222019%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ISBN%22%3A%22%22%2C%22citationKey%22%3A%22%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ISS
